Inline hockey and ice hockey
Inline hockey is a variation of roller hockey very similar to ice hockey, from which it is derived. The game is played by two teams, consisting of four skaters and one goalie, on a dry rink divided into two halves by a center line, with one net at each end of the rink. The game is played in two 20-minute periods, or similar. For rink dimensions and an overview of the rules of the game, see USA Hockey Inline Rules. Generally speaking, only competitive level inline hockey is strictly bound by governing body's rules. Recreational hockey leagues may make modifications to certain aspects of the rules to suit local requirements (size of rink, length of periods and penalties). Inline hockey has...

The player who has preceded the puck/ball over the center red line "tags up" by making skate contact with the center line. For a violation of this...

Ice Hockey Equipment
Ice hockey requires special equipment. The basics being the stick and the puck. The ice hockey stick is slightly less curved than the routine hockey stick and may be made of wood or a high-tech composite material. The composite stick is sturdier, but also more expensive. Instead of a ball, there is a hard, vulcanized rubber disc called as the puck, which is supposed to be hit with the stick towards the goal net. Ice hockey players use special skates, which have blade grips to facilitate contact with the ice. The goal net, which is made of steel frames and synthetic nylon net, can be dismantled for storage. When the hockey stick is swung strong enough, he puck moves at about 120-160 km/h, increasing...
Before you spend a lot of money for a new pair of ice hockey skates, first consider your level of play among two basic categories: the recreational skater and the amateur hockey player. Chances are, you will fall somewhere within these two groups and finding the right skate for you can save you plenty.1.)The recreational skater, one who enjoys ice skating as an occasional pass-time, would not necessarily require a high-end hockey skate like those designed for amateur league play. On the other hand, the same skater should not compromise comfort and safety merely to save a few dollars. One could easily find a suitable pair of hockey skates from a major manufacturer without spending a lot of money and...

The Four Fundamentals of Top Ice Hockey Skating
In ice hockey, skating can make or break you. Here are the 4 fundamentals to becoming a top performing ice hockey skater, plus 4 extra techniques to push you right over the edge!1. A solid, well-balanced stance is basic to any degree of speed you want to attain. If you will work on your starts, stops, and turns as described, you will be well on your way to good balance.2. In striding, you have better balance if you skate with your feet about shoulder width apart. If your feet are too close together, you are more easily knocked off-balance in the heavy going of a game.3. The faster you skate, the more you should bend forward from the waist. The comparison here is to the body-lean of a sprinter doing...

Armchair Olympian
I am not a die-hard sports enthusiast, but confess I enjoyed watching the winter Olympics held in Turino Italy. It was nice to watch something positive and motivational for a change and to delight in some truly amazing and generous acts. I find the wide variety of sports showcased fascinating, proving there is a lot one can do in cold climates of winter!Consider the spectrum of sports. There are the many varieties of skiing. The downhill event has skiers reaching speeds of 140 kilometers per hour (87 mph), you get speeding tickets for going that fast in a car! Imagine what it takes to be a ski jumper as you attempt to imitate flight and defy gravity the longest once you are airborne. Picture the...
The Dish: Whoa Canada!
The U.S. men's hockey team was a disaster waiting to happen. Most of them got stuck in a blizzard before the Games started. Several of them were over age 60. And they had the combined mental toughness and discipline of former FEMA Director Michael "Brownie" Brown. That they went 1-4-1 in Turin is no surprise. Keith Tkachuk embarrassed himself throughout the tournament with worse hands than Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot, and Mike Modano humiliated himself complaining about his hotel arrangements afterward. They were supposed to suck, and they did.But what the heck happened to Canada? I called a repeat Canadian gold in this very space a couple weeks ago, and, um, well, not so much. (You may remember...

Skates Are Fun
There was a time that roller skating was limited to one age group and could be an activity you would see in very limited locations, this has long changed and roller skating has become a very serious thing, today you can confidently say that there are skaters of all ages all groups and probably across the whole world. Not very surprising the roller skates is not such a modern invention, dating back to 1749 the roller skates have made a difference in the way people traveled from one stop to the other, and soon after that it became a form of art as people perfected the skating movements into something that is graceful and delicate. The new form of transportation and movement soon received its fame and...
Roller Hockey Equipment
Roller hockey, also known as inline hockey, is played on roller or inline skates with wheels, which are placed in sets of three or four in a single line. Skates are generally priced at $100 and up.Aluminum sticks are preferred for roller hockey, however, wooden sticks covered with fiberglass may also be used. This is because concrete or cement, upon which inine hockey is usually played, is much harder on the sticks than ice. The sticks, with suede or rubber grips, are broader and bent at the base, to maneuver the puck or ball and are priced at upwards of $20.Roller hockey is played with either a puck or a ball. The puck is made of hard, vulcanized rubber and is made in regulation sizes; balls are...

Cheating to Win?
Are you ready to cheat to win? Are you those which believe that the end justifies the means and that it is necessary to do everything to win? I am not talking about the use of steroids or any other illegal act. No, I am talking about the small cheating that we make and which, sometimes, seems to be part of the game. Indeed, who never gave a small kick on its golf ball or 'forgot' to count a penalty? Hmmm? Who never pretended a fault in basketball after loosing the ball to influence the referee? Hmmm?I thought about this after a friend spoke to me about a comment his son made to him the other day. His 11 years old son is a goalkeeper in hockey. During a game, there was a tight play close to the...
Unleaded & Unscented
Remember how simple it was to buy fuel for your car? There was one brand called gasoline or petrol, but today you go to the pump station and have to decide upon unleaded regular, unleaded silver and unleaded platinum or they come with numbers like unleaded supreme 98 and super 95. Why is the lead out? Why did they ever put it in? Apparently gasoline has no lead to begin with? That was when you could buy one kind: gasoline. Simple, easy and no nonsense. When and why did they put the lead in just to take it out again? And why does it now cost more to remove what was not there in the first place and later added to further remove? The answer lies somewhere with environmental issues but the question...
Bearings in Our Everyday Lives
Have you ever wondered how cars and other motor vehicles run smoothly and quietly? As a child, I have always been in awe of how these powerful machines work. Later on, I understood that these machines run smoothly with the help of smaller machines called bearings. Bearings are important to the machines we use everyday, for without them, we would need to frequently replace broken machine parts due to the wear and tear of friction.A bearing is a tool used to reduce the friction that occurs in machines. Friction is a kind of force which opposes the movement of a surface in sliding or rolling motion over another surface with which it is in contact. Bearings bear the frictional force which is set up by...

Exploring Ontario in the Winter - Hello from Barrie: Lots of Winter Fun without Need for Mountains
Our winter getaway over the last two days was supposed to include a couple of different activities: snow-tubing and outdoor skating. Well, our outdoor skating fell through, due to the extraordinarily warm conditions, however, we had a beautiful day yesterday on Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie, where we enjoyed some great outdoor time on frozen Lake Simcoe.Today, after our delicious filling breakfast at Nicholyn Farms Bed and Breakfast, we headed off for another adventure: snowtubing at Horseshoe Valley. Unfortunately the weather today was even less cooperative: as the day progressed it went from freezing rain to rain to a veritable downpour as we drove back to Toronto.Nevertheless the morning was cold...

The Game is the Name
Shakespeare could wax poetic about 'What's in a Name?' because he didn't have to contend with sports mascots ...It's the politically-correct issue in America that refuses to subside. I consider myself to be an enlightened cyberbeing, but I contend there are just some topics that blur the bigger picture of an ethically responsible society, and complaining that mascots can be degrading is near the top of the list.A quick check of Webster's Twentieth Century Unabridged Dictionary defines 'mascot' as 'any person, animal or thing supposed to bring good luck by being present.' So, it would seem that a team mascot is an honorable title. Most mascots in American sports had their origins in the early 1900s...

The Importance of Having Good Golf Shoes
One of the most important tools that you have in your playing arsenal is also one of the most overlooked. Yup, the lowly golf shoe. The importance of a good fitting golf shoe cannot be understated. Think about it. If your feet are properly secured to ground, the rest of you won't be either when you make that swing. Shoes that slip or slide on wet grass, or shoes that feel like you're standing on nails in dry conditions will only diminish your game and cost you strokes at the end of the day. It's not always necessary to buy a new pair of golf shoes. In many cases, a good cleaning and changing out the cleats is all you need to do. Switching out your old cleats is a simple job. It may take a few minutes...
Digital Sports Photography - Top-Scoring Shots With Expert Coaching
A digital sports photography article would have been fairly brief as recently as a couple of years ago. In essence, it would have stated that digital cameras have unacceptable shutter lag, and cannot yet achieve the frame rates of their film cousins. End of story.Well, that particular story has in fact ended. These days the focus is on digital cameras finally reaching the level of film cameras, and being widely used with great effect in digital sports photography. The aim nowadays is to point out the clear benefits offered by the digital route. In fact, a number of excellent books have appeared on digital sports photography, confirming that this type of photography has finally become an acceptable...

Few things are as rewarding as seeing your child glow from the inside out. And it happens when children have a high self esteem: when they know themselves to be unconditionally accepted, when they feel both loved and lovable, and when they feel a sense of belonging and self worth. Here are twelve simple activities that have really made a difference in our family. These are the rituals that I find especially important to staying connected and to communicating my love and appreciation for each child.1. Rely on rituals to help you reconnect. The Top 10 Ways to Reduce Violence
I happen to live near the one of the tragic "school shootings" of the recent past, and I've seen how the grief, anger, heartache and turmoil have impacted our community. It has brought home that a general abhorrence of violence is not enough. While I'm sure others will have different, and perhaps wiser, suggestions about how to reduce violence, here are my Top 10 Ways to Reduce Violence. If you can improve them, I welcome your feedback, but I suspect it may be more important and more useful if you write a letter to your local newspaper or school board. Together, we can reduce and perhaps eliminate violence.1. Disconnect anger from violence. I am convinced that human beings get angry, and that anger...
